    Notes 
    • Manoah Stone Smith was born in Kentucky in January, 1821 to Andrew and Asenath (Stone) Smith. The parents moved to Gibson County, Indiana when he was two years old and he was reared there. He became a farmer, first purchasing 40 acres of land, then four years later added another 40 acre tract, followed by another 100 acres three years later. Yet a few years later, he purchased 180 acres for the Reuben Emmerson homestead, including four acres in the town of Owensville.

      Manoah was twice married, first to Miss Elizabeth Emerson. After her death, he married Martha Benson, a daughter of William Benson of Kentucky, on November 4, 1854. They were blessed with seven children, namely: John F., who died September 11, 1893; Zerilda R., wife of B. Forbes; Cordelia Dorson; Columbus B.; Ulysses R.; Mary Della; and Marguerite E. [10, 11]
